Pat Longan Tompkins McGill


Patricia Longan Tompkins McGill passed away December 22, 2010, in Austin, Texas.  Her husband John McGill had passed away four months previously in August 2010.

Pat is survived by son Tim Tompkins and his wife Karis of Raleigh, NC;  son Mark Tompkins and his wife Lisa, and granddaughters Marua and Lillia.  

Pat earned a Masters degree in social work at Catholic University, and a Ph.D in special education from the University of Texas.  She had over 47 years experience in work that included child welfare, treatment centers for children and adolescents, and teaching at the University of Texas, Austin, and the College of Santa Fe.  Pat was also executive director of Las Cumbres Learning Center, which offers programs for people with learning disabilities and their families.  Most recently, Pat provided psychotherapy to children in Austin.  

Pat was the author of many publications and co-author of the text book "Survival in the Public Schools in the 1990's".

Pat was at AHS through Junior year, then her family moved to Hayward, California.   Her father was with the Immigration service.   Pat attended Texas Woman's University and Texas Tech, where she was our classmate Mary Ruth 'Twerp' Knight McGarr's roommate.
